Chapter 62 You're Taking Her Side

Three days later, Sally was losing it. “Tobias, your daughter's gone nuts. | just asked her to meet my nephew,

and now she’s accusing him of sexual harassment! My family runs a company too, you know. Even if she wasn’t

into him, no need to go around slandering him!”

Tobias was fuming. “You're serious? She went to the police? They're not even touching it. No evidence.”

Sally stomped her heel. “Tobias, did you forget she’s a lawyer? She could twist anything into anything. She could

make black look white if she wanted to.”

Tobias tried to calm her down. “Alright, | hear you. She’s coming back in a few days for her grandma’s memorial.

I'll talk to her then.”

Kaia clocked back in at the firm after her short leave. Warren gave her a once-over, concern all over his face.

“Are you okay, Kaia? The Graves Group merger’s on pause till next week. Why not stretch your break a little and

get srest?”

She forced a tired smile. “We only get three days of

bereavement. Anything more counts as PTO.” Besides, too much still needed her attention. She couldn't afford to

just sit around.

Jude called them both into his office. “Kaia, how are you feeling?

Back in the game?”

“I'm good, Jude. Really.”

“Alright. You and Warren are going to Ease Electronics this afternoon for due diligence.”

“Got it!” Kaia and Warren said in sync.

Ease Electronics had been family-owned for a decade, and the internal was a mess. Politics ran deep,

which made their due diligence a total nightmare. The head of finance was the CEO's uncle.

The moment Kaia walked in, the guy hit her with a cold front. “Ms. Domont, Mr. Wright-here are five years of

reports. Contracts? Those aren't available.”

Kaia didn’t flinch. “I'm sure your sales team has backups. Mind giving them a heads-up so they can shoot us a

copy?”

“Sales is slammed. No tfor that, Ms. Domont.”

That kind of stonewalling was just part of the job. Kaia was used to this. She'd have to work with what they got

for now.

Around four, Kaia dropped by the sales department with ten cups of milkshake-asking for help. The manager,

Camilla, was easygoing and agreed without hesitation. Not even an hour later,

the data landed in Kaia’s inbox.

She thanked Camilla with a warm smile and left with Warren. Warren threw her a thumbs-up. “Damn, that was

smooth.”

Kaia chuckled, “Not bad.”

As they stepped outside, Kaia glanced at her phone-it was a text from Tobias.

[Kaia, we're family. Don’t be so stubborn. Drop the case at the station.]

Should've thought of that before they drugged me.

Her eyes darkened. She deleted the message without a second thought.

But when she got downstairs at work, Tobias was already waiting for her.

Warren looked curiously at the well-dressed, scholarly-looking man. “Kaia, is that your dad?”

Kaia nodded briefly. “You go ahead. Tell Jude I'll be up in a bit.”

Then, she walked calmly toward Tobias’ car.

“Kaia, did you see the message | sent you?” Tobias asked.

A smirk tugged at Kaia’s lips. “Yeah, but | deleted it.”

“You-“Tobias felt his anger flare up immediately. “You've been getting more and more disrespectful lately. I'm

your father, but you won't even return my texts?”

Kaia let out a harsh laugh, her voice bitter. “So what if you're my dad? Your wife druggedand had her

nephew try to assault me, and you-my own father-wantto just forget it and pretend everything's fine so we

can all play happy family again?”

She paused, her eyes flashing with anger. “I don’t care how patient you think | should be, I'm not swallowing this.

Why should | drop the charges?”

Tobias was confused, as Kaia and

Sally were telling completely different

stories. His brows Reyes [i7)

“Mistaken?” Kaia’s voice rose. “She druggedbefore too, remember? Draggedinto a car and lockedin

a room. But now suddenly, she’s not that kind of person?”

Her eyes narrowed as she stared at him. “Or maybe you knew about it all along, Dad. Maybe you're taking her

side on purpose.”

“That's enough!” Tobias shot back in a harsh whisper. “She only toldshe wanted you two to meet up. How

was | supposed to know what she was really planning?

“Look, | think there’s been skind of misunderstanding here. We're family, so maybe we can just have her

nephew apologize to you and call it even.”

Anger flared up inside Kaia, and her voice turned ice-cold. “So you'd rather believe soutsider than your own

daughter, is that it, Dad?”

Tobias shook his head firmly, his voice defensive. “How can you call Sally an outsider? She’s been my wife for

over 20 years— she’s family.”

Kaia scoffed, a bitter laugh escaping

her. “I'm not dropping this cass. (the

“Good luck living with your decision, Dad.”

Kaia turned and walked out without looking back, ignoring the helpless shout of Tobias behind her. She kept

with steady determination, not even slowing her pace.
