Chapter 57 Mystery Guy

Kimberly shrugged, playing fake innocent. “Or... forget it. | probably saw it wrong.”

Alden stared, brows drawing tight. “Which corner?” His voice dropped cold.

“Over there,” she pointed, then smiled sweetly. “But hey, don’t tell her | said anything, okay? She'll kill me.”

“I won't.”

Alden turned and walked off, his sympathy burning away under suspicion. His head spun with one thought-

figuring out who that mystery guy was. No wonder she dumped him so fast; she already had someone else.

Rounding the corner, he nearly stumbled. There Kaia was, crouched low, looking at a photo of her grandma.

“You...” His voice caught, jealousy nearly spilling out. “You okay?” he asked, rough but sincere.

Kaia looked up, then quickly looked away. “Yeah. I'm fine.”

“Look, Kaia, you don’t gotta be strong all the time. If you need anything, say it.”

“Really?” She looked at the photo one last time, stood up, wiped her hands, and said softly, “Anything?”

“Yeah,” Alden said quickly. “Anything | can do, I'll do it.”

“Alright.” A slow, almost smug smile touched her face. “Then | want this, Alden-stay out of my life. My one ask? |

never wanna see you again. Think you can handle that?”

Alden barely remembered getting hthat day. Luna took one look at him and knew something was off.

“Alden, what's going on? You look totally spaced out,” Luna said, narrowing her eyes at him.

He opened his mouth, but the words just wouldn't come.

[Luna, Alden went looking for Kaia. Bet he caught her cozying up with srandom guy. Relax, she’s out of your

way now.]

Luna skimmed the message, and her heart sank. She knew exactly what Kimberly was hinting at.

She hated it, but part of her had always known Kaia still had a piece of him.

Kimberly didn’t tell Luna that man was Lucien. In her mind, Lucien was already hers. Sure, he was out of reach,

but she was dead set on reeling him in. As far as she was concerned, Kaia

nn

was just playing the victim to get sympathy.

She didn’t buy it. Kaia had brought this on herself.

Luna locked her phone just as Alden mumbled, “It’s nothing. Just got up way too early.”

She didn’t push. “Then go crash, alright?”

Alden didn’t even catch the way she was watching him.

Alyssa stayed behind and sat quietly next to Kaia. “If you need to cry, it’s okay. I'm here.”

Kaia shook her head. “No, Alyssa. | can’t. Not now.”

But really, how could she not?

Everyone who knew Kaia knew Claire was her whole world.

“Alyssa, go home. | just wanna sit with her a little longer, just the two of us.”

Alyssa gave her a long, quiet hug like she was trying to pass along sstrength before leaving.

Kaia hadn't slept in three nights at the wake. She ran on nothing

an

but willpower.

And now that Claire had been buried, she felt like there was a hole in her chest.

Leaving the cemetery, Kaia thought she’d go back home, but her dad called after her, asking her to stay for

dinner.

She paused, then figured they probably needed to talk anyway. She got into the car.

“Kaia, | know you're upset, but you really need to apologize to the Graves family. Especially Zane. Sir Graves

may be on your side, but the company’s mostly in Zane’s hands now. If he wants to screwover, there's

nothing | can do!”

Kaia arched a brow. “Isn’t Lucien the one actually running the place now?”

“Don’t get smart! Show srespect. You don’t get to call him by name!”

Kaia leaned her head back and shut her eyes. She was so over this.

“I'm tired, Dad. I'm gonna take a nap. Whatever you're about to say, save it.”

Sally and Tobias exchanged a look and gave up trying.

Two hours crawled by before they pulled into the driveway.

With Claire’s memorial coming up, Kaia figured she'd stay at her dad's for a few days.

She didn’t even glance back. “I'm heading upstairs.”

“Hold up!”

Tobias called after her, “Kaia, what's with the attitude lately? Can't | say one thing without a fight?”

Kaia dropped onto the couch, completely drained. “If you've got something to say, then spit it out. I'm wiped.”

Sally tried to play peacekeeper. “It's

nothing, sweetie. Your dad just m

So that’s what they are after.

Kaia let out a cold laugh. “Letguess-you wantto just hand it over? Not happening.”

“Grandma left it tofair and square. If you want shares, maybe Dad can gift you some. He's still got 59

percent.”

Sally’s jaw clenched. She looked ready to explode.

If Tobias had ever planned to share, she wouldn't be chasing scraps now.

She'd stuck around all these years and gotten squat. Of course she was bitter.

Tobias kept his voice even. “Kaia, |

can't just hand over shares. Theye

there to balange thbbard Don t

make hs harder than it needs to be.

Just transfer them to Sally. Don't

make this a fight. I'm in a tight spot.”

Kaia gave a sharp laugh. “Are you serious? Why would | give up what Grandma left me?”

Sally shot Tobias a look and tugged his sleeve. “Tobias...”

He sighed, clearly out of options. His daughter wasn’t someone he could bend.

Kaia gave a tired smile. “I'm going upstairs to sleep. Don’t bother callingfor dinner.”

Seeing them two killed her appetite.

Once Kaia disappeared, Sally nearly lost it.

“What the hell, Tobias? You promised you’d hand those shares over after your mom passed. Now your daughter

Tobias rubbed his temples. “Did you

Sally’s eyes lit up. “My uncle’s son is a catch. Ivy League, runs his own biz, and makes bank. Sure, he’s thirty-

eight, but older guys know how to treat a woman.”
