Chapter 47 A Proposal Ceremony You'll Never Forget
Zane started to object when he saw his son and adopted daughter get into the slimousine, but Joanne laid a
calming hand on his arm.
“It’s fine, dear,” she said smoothly. “The maid of honor can ride in the main car. Besides, it's Luna. It's fine.”
Zane grumbled but let it go.
Alyssa had insisted on accompanying her grandfather today. She'd promised Kaia she wouldn't leave his side.
His heart medication was in her pocket, ready if his color showed even the slightest change.
Yesterday, Alyssa had grilled Kaia about her plan. She knew Kaia wanted out of this engagement badly. But Kaia
was playing this one incredibly close to the vest, not even telling her supposed best friend. Alyssa fumed silently.
Just wait until today is over. | am going to have words with Kaia!
At the wedding venue, Kimberly spotted her most glamorous friend immediately. “Luna, you look stunning!”
Luna offered a small smile. “You too, Kimberly.” She glanced pointedly at the Domont family’s section. “Where's
Kaia? Don’t
tellthe bride’s going to be late to her own wedding.”
Her voice, though not loud, carried just far enough to reach Zane and Joanne’s ears. A flicker of annoyance
crossed Joanne’s usually placid features. She looked at Sally. “Sally, dear. Kaia is coming, isn’t she?” -
Sally laughed brittlely, “Oh, you know, traffic! The makeup artist was late. She'll be here any second, I'm sure!”
The truth was, they had no clue. Kaia’s phone had been going straight to voicemail all morning.
Families mingled, and guests chatted, but everyone was waiting for Kaia to make an appearance.
The minutes ticked by. Eleven o'clock loomed. Zane and Tobias guided the guests to their seats.
Zane leaned close to Alden. “What the hell is going on? Where's your bride?”
Tobias was practically sweating bullets. “Kimberly, call your sister again! Find her, damn it!”
A wave of pure annoyance washed over Alden.
What is Kaia playing at?
She promised. She won't standup, will she?
The thought alone sent a chill through him.

Only Luna seemed unruffled, with a faint, knowing smile as she observed the chaos.
So, Kaia isn’t that heartless after all.
She'd called the hospital first thing that morning. She knew Kaia had been there.
Her Achilles’ heel was always so painfully obvious.
Outside the grand venue, Lucien sat in his car, his face like
stone.
His phone buzzed. A text from someone: [Uncle Lucien, you're not coming?]
He stared at the screen, eyes cold enough to freeze time.
Then he got another text: [Are you going to the wedding?]
He closed his eyes, leaned his head back, and stayed motionless for a long time.
So long that Paul Roberts, his driver, finally cleared his throat. “Mr. Graves? Perhaps | should move us into the
shade? The sun's pretty strong here.”
Lucien’s eyes snapped open, his gaze as sharp and commanding
as ever.
“Just take the car to the main lot. I'll call when | need you.”
His voice, deep and resonant, left no room for argument. He pushed open the car door and strode toward the
entrance.
There were only twenty minutes left until noon. If this thing didn’t start soon, tongues wouldn't just wag. They'd
flap.
Actually, the whispering had already begun.
“What's the deal today? Has anyone actually seen the bride?”
“Beats me. The Domont heiress? | heard she was practically chasing after Alden for years. No way she'd be a
runaway bride, right?”
Most people figured the chances of Kaia bailing on her own wedding were slim to none.
“There! Look! On the stairs! That woman in the dark dress... Is
that Kaia?”
Instantly, every head in the room swiveled toward the grand staircase descending from the mezzanine.
Kaia appeared, not in bridal white but in a show-stopping, jaw-dropping emerald green velvet gown. Her hair was
swept up in an elegant twist, and a simple pearl choker encircled her neck. Her shoulder was wrapped in white
bandages.
“What in God's nis that? I've never seen a bride wear that!”
“Seriously? | heard her mom died young, so maybe no one taught her any better. But this is beyond tacky!”
“Oh, this is gonna be good! Popcorn, anyone?”
Alden saw her, the woman who'd vanished, now reappearing in that dress, and his face went dark with fury.
He stormed onto the dais, his voice a
low, vicious hiss. “Kaia, you're late

He reached for her hand. She smoothly sidestepped him.
“Kaia, what do you think you're doing?”
Kaia’s sneer widened. “You love your adopted sister so much, don’t you, Alden?
