Chapter 45 Threat
“Handle things here in Washington. | need to be on the first flight back to New York. Book it now!”
It was eight o'clock in the evening when Tobias finally walked into the hospital. Kaia had blocked his number, so
he had to call around to find out that his mother had been moved to the ICU on the sixteenth floor.
As Tobias stepped out of the elevator, he saw Kaia at the end of the hall, looking like she'd just cfrom the
doctor's office. “Kaia,” he called out, loud enough to sound authoritative but not enough to cause a scene.
She glanced up to see her father walking toward her in his usual polished suit. At forty-five, Tobias was still in
shape, with gym sessions once a week, and always put together. Looking at him, Kaia saw a faint, unpleasant
echo of her own features in his.
Her half-sister loved bragging about how much she looked like their dad. What's so great about resembling
someone so cold-blooded?
The reek of expensive liquor rolled off him in waves. His own mother was undergoing life-saving surgery, and he
was out drinking with clients. The man had no shame.
“What's with the attitude, Kaia?” Tobias frowned, genuinely

“Where's your grandma? Which room? I'll go see her.”
Kaia let out a short; cold laugh. “Grandma had a stroke. She’s in the ICU.”

“A stroke?” Tobias asked, startled. That was bad.
“Didn’t | tell you to call Sally? Why didn’t you?”
Kaia leveled a dead stare at him. “She and Grandma can’t stand each other. What's she gonna do? Walk in and
revive her out of spite?”
“You!” Tobias sputtered, then collected himself. “Which room?
Take me!”
Kaia looked at him like he was an idiot. “Don’t you know ICU visiting hours are three to five?”
Tobias was momentarily stumped. Right. It was eight o'clock, long past visiting hours.
“So, what's the prognosis? Is she going to wake up? And if she does... what are the chances of permanent brain
damage?”
Kaia slowly looked up. Her eyes, webbed with exhaustion and
fury, bored into him. “How can you even ask that? Dad, do you want her to be worse off?”
Tobias knew he’d gone too far. He cleared his throat with a small cough and shot Kaia a glare. “That's ridiculous!
She’s my mother! Of course, | want what's best for her!
“Anyway, since we can’t see her now, you might as well focus on tomorrow. The wedding’s still on.”
Kaia held up her arm, still in its sling, and pinned him with a cold stare. “And how am | supposed to get married

His words, so devoid of any warmth, tore fresh holes in Kaia’s already shredded heart. A bitter wind howled
through them.
“You're that desperate for this alliance?” she asked.
“Yes!” Tobias said, his jaw set. “I need their money, their backing, their network.” He laid his ambitions
