Chapter 41 Rescue
Just then, her phone rang.
She stared at the caller ID, the red-eyed bunny avatar. A little jolt went through her.
Why is he calling?
“Hello, Mr. Graves...”
“Yeah. I'm at your gate. Which room is yours?”
Kaia faltered.
“Mr. Graves, you know already?”.
“Mm-hmm.” Lucien confirmed, ever succinct. “Alyssa filledin. So, where's your room?”
Kaia snapped out of her surprise. “Oh! Oh, right. Mr. Graves, you can get in through the back. My room faces the
back gate, but-uh-there are usually two guards down there.”
She paused, then suddenly leaned toward the glass. “Oh! Wait -one of them just left! | think he went to the
bathroom or something-"
Lucien chuckled, a low sound, “Easy. Hold tight. I'm coming to
rescue you.”
He put this odd little emphasis on “rescue,” like it was skind of joke-or maybe a dare.
Rescue me? Please don't tellhe expects a thank-you kiss or something insane like that.
Kaia tried to quash the absurd idea. She pressed herself against the curtains, eyes glued to the remaining guard
below.
As if on cue, the guard, who'd been periodically glancing up at her window, suddenly broke into a run toward the
main gate.
Kaia seized her chance, throwing open the window. And there he was, bathed in moonlight.
Lucien tilted his head back with a faint smile. He calmly opened his arms. “Dare to jump?”
Kaia’s breath hitched. That had to be at least-what-twenty feet? Maybe more.

Lucien’s eyebrow furrowed slightly. “Yeah. | can catch you.”
A knot of fear still twisted in Kaia’s stomach, but she gritted her teeth, squeezed her eyes shut, and jumped.
A solid embrace, warm body heat, and the lingering scent of sandalwood filled her senses.
She looked up, breathless, a wave of giddy relief washing over her. “Mr. Graves!”
His lashes cast soft shadows under the moonlight, and for the briefest moment, she caught the whisper of a
smile tugging at his lips.
“Yeah. | got you.”
Kaia looked up, enveloped by a searing warmth.
She could feel the firm pressure on her back, his palm radiating heat even through the thin fabric of her dress.
Kaia’s heart skipped a beat. “Mr. Graves, what are you doing
here?”
She was oblivious to her flushed cheeks, the way a few stray strands of hair clung damply to her skin.
Her eye sparkled-mischievous, wild, alive.
Lucien’s gaze darkened.
His Adam’s apple bobbed slightly, and something dangerous
flickered behind his eyes. Something that burned.
Before he could answer, voices drifted closer from behind them.
“Where the hell did you go?”
“Heard someone banging on the main gate. Had to check it out. Probably just sstupid cat wilding.”
The other guard grumbled, “Whatever. Let's just head back. Don’t get us any trouble.”
Hearing their approaching footsteps, Kaia instinctively grabbed Lucien’s hand and bolted for the back gate.
“Mr. Graves, run!”
Her pink skirt swayed gracefully with the gentle breeze.
Lucien followed her unhurriedly toward the back gate.
But the back gate was deadbolted from the inside.
Kaia looked troubled, staring at the surrounding wall. “Damn it. Mr. Graves, maybe you could givea boost?”
Lucien calmly bent down, patting his own shoulder. “Hop on.”
Kaia bit her lip. “You... sure?”
Technically, he was still her client.
Just then, the shouts of the pursuing bodyguards spurred her into action. All thoughts of propriety vanished. She
scrambled onto his shoulder, using his strength to lever herself onto the top of the wall.
Then, Lucien placed one hand on the wall’s edge and vaulted over with ease in a mere two seconds.
He stood outside the villa, and once again, opened his arms to her. “Jump.”
This time, Kaia didn’t hesitate. A jolt of pure adrenaline shot through her.
She was a complete mess, but she felt an exhilarating, almost reckless sense of freedom.
Lucien’s arm snaked around her waist. “Let's go. Car's this way.”
The black Maybach was parked by the roadside.
By the tthe bodyguards finally burst out of the gate, all they saw was a rapidly diminishing cloud of exhaust.

Kaia’s breath hitched in her throat.
Wait-what?
What does that mean?
Before she could process it, his phone buzzed.
Lucien answered on speaker.
“Yeah.” His tone was clipped, impatient.
The voice on the other end sounded nervous. “Mr. Graves, your flight to Washington leaves in an hour and a half.

It hit Kaia, then. He was rushing to catch a flight.
“Right,” Lucien said, his voice cool, unreadable. “Got it.”
After he hung up, a wave of guilt washed over Kaia. “Mr. Graves,

Lucien pressed his lips together. “Seriously? You think they won't try to drag you back again?”
