Chapter 100 Kaia Looks After Lucien

The next day arrived in a quiet rush.

Kaia was still caught up in the somber rhythm of her grandmother's memorial rituals. There were fourteen more

days to go before the mourning period would end.

Thinking of her promise to bring Lucien soup, Kaia left the law firm early at three in the afternoon and headed to

the Domont Villa.

In their tradition, today’s arrangements fell to the deceased's daughter or granddaughter.

Kaia, shouldering the responsibility, stopped by the market for fresh ingredients and spent the afternoon in the

kitchen, preparing a few dishes with care.

As she was getting ready to head to the memorial, her father, Tobias, walked in.

“Kaia, you're home?” His voice carried a note of surprise, as if he hadn't expected to see her.

Kaia’s eyes dimmed for a moment. “Dad, it’s my duty to handle things at htoday, according to custom.”

Tobias’ face stiffened briefly, a flicker of guilt crossing his

features. “Right, | got caught up with work and forgot. You should've reminded me, Kaia. What if I'd made plans

for tonight?”

“If you miss it, you miss it,” Kaia said softly, her voice tinged with resignation. “It’s not like it's the first time.”

Tobias frowned, his tone sharpening. “What's that supposed to mean?”

Before she could respond, he shifted gears, pulling out his phone with a spark of excitement. “By the way, Kaia,

is this you and Lucien in the photo?”

Kaia glanced at the screen, her brows knitting together in

surprise.

“Who sent you that? Are you havingfollowed?”

“Don’t be ridiculous,” Tobias said, waving off her suspicion. “Why would | have you tailed? Kimberly sent it to me.

She spotted you while shopping yesterday.”

He conveniently left out the less-than-flattering remarks Kimberly had made about Kaia.

Kaia didn’t need him to spell it out-she could guess what her sister had said. Nothing good, that was for sure.

“So, is it Lucien or not?” Tobias pressed, his eyes gleaming with

anticipation.

Kaia met his gaze and gave a small nod. “It is.”

Tobias’ face lit up, a triumphant grin spreading across it.

“Dad, you should head to the memorial now,” Kaia reminded him, her voice steady but distant.

She glanced at the clock-six o'clock sharp.

In the kitchen, the clam chowder she'd been simmering was ready, its rich aroma filling the air.

Sue, the maid, poked her head in. “Ms. Domont, are you taking that soup hfor dinner?”

Kaia shook her head. “No, it’s not for me. Sue, could you graba thermos? | need to take it all with me.”

“Got one right here!” Sue said, bustling off to fetch it.

Kaia packed the steaming chowder into the thermos and headed to Lucien’s villa.

When she arrived, the sprawling estate was eerily quiet, not a single staff member in sight.

It looked like they really did take the day off.

She rang the doorbell, and a faint, gravelly voice drifted through

the intercom.

“Kaia, you know the code. Let yourself in. I'm too weak to up.”

Her heart sank.

Is he that sick?

Why is he even home? He should be in the hospital.

Kaia punched in the code and stepped inside, her eyes scanning the first floor and finding no one there.

She climbed the stairs, her footsteps echoing in the stillness.

“Lucien?” she called softly.

“In here,” chis low, weary voice from the bedroom.

Kaia pushed open the door, thermos in hand, and found Lucien propped up against the headboard, his face pale

and drawn. The sight sent a jolt of worry through her.

“Lucien, are you okay?” she asked, her voice tight with concern.

He shook his head weakly. “Just a bit cold, that’s all.”

Kaja set the thermos down and, without thinking, sat on the

edge of his bed. She pressed the back of her hand to his forehead, her brow furrowing.

“You're burning up, Lucien. You've got a fever.”

He was burning-though not just from a fever.

His heart was racing, warmed by her presence.

Lucien licked his dry lips, his voice a faint croak.

“Really? Is it bad? Am I... gonna make it?”

Kaia’s eyes widened, a flash of irritation mixing with her worry.

“Don’t say things like that. It’s not funny.”

Clearly, the fever was messing with his head. He was talking

nonsense now.

“You need to go to the hospital,” she insisted.

“No way,” Lucien said, turning his face away stubbornly.

“You have to,” she pressed. “You could do real damage if this gets worse.”

Lucien fell silent for a moment, then muttered, “It’s not that bad. I'll be fine with smedicine.”

“Where's your medicine box?” Kaia asked, already standing.

“Downstairs, under the table,” he replied.

She hurried down, found the fever reducers, and returned with a glass of water.

“Here, take these,” she said, holding the pills out.

Lucien parted his lips slightly, looking up at her expectantly, like a child waiting to be fed.

Kaia hesitated, a little surprised.

However, his lips were pale, his face fragile.

Indeed, he didn’t look like he could hold the glass of water by himself.

Without a word, she placed the pills in his mouth and carefully tilted the glass to help him drink.

Propped against the headboard, Lucien murmured, “Thanks for going through all this trouble. And for the soup.”

Kaia blinked, nearly forgetting her mission. “You want to try sbefore resting? It might help you rest better.”

He shook his head, a faint smile tugging at his lips. “I'm too weak to drink.”

His hint couldn't have been more obvious.

Kaia pressed her lips together, hesitating. “I'll feed you.”

“Great,” Lucien agreed quickly.

It was clear he didn’t want to give her a chance to change her

mind.

She ladled the soup into a bowl, blowing on each spoonful to cool it before gently guiding it to his mouth.

Lucien’s only job was to open his mouth and swallow.

Lucien savored the last spoonful of soup, his eyes quietly tracing her expression.

The warmth of the chowder couldn't quite thaw the chill he sensed in her mood.

Was she upset because of him? Because of the burden of caring

for him?

It didn’t seem like it.

“How was work today?” he asked, his voice rough but gentle, testing the waters.
