It was as if she understood every word, the baby stretched out a hand, slowly gesturing in the air before letting out a yawn.
"I'm getting sleepy again, but I'll chat with dad for a bit more before | go back to sleep!"
Dorothy found this scene incredibly heartwarming, until thatment made her burst into laughter.
"Are you sure she gets what you're saying?"
"It doesn't matter! She hears my voice every day, and she'll remember it. That way, she'll grow up to be daddy's little girl!"
And that, to him, was all that mattered.
Dorothy felt like they were on different wavelengths at the moment, so she sighed, thinking of heading to the bathroom to freshen
up.
Seeing her attempt to get up, Everett was quick to offer a hand, still cradling their daughter with the other.
"Got the one-arm hold down already, have you?"

"Quick learner." A hint of pride flashed across his handsface. "Not just the one-arm hold. I've mastered the burping, the
airplane hold, you nit."
Everett was so protective of their daughter, he barely trusted the nanny with her. He'd have set up his laptop right beside her crib
if he wasn't worried about the electronics being too close.
Dorothy was still tender from the C-section, so her movements were slow and careful.
Everett shadowed her every step, ready to catch her if needed.
"Take it slow, smaller steps."
"I'm okay! It's not as bad as you think."
Once in the bathroom, Dorothy wet a washcloth with warm water, then suddenly turned to Everett with a proposal.
"Everett, | want to discuss something with you, is that okay?"
"Sure, anything you want."
She couldn't help but laugh and cry at the stime. "You haven't even heard what it is yet, and you're agreeing?"
"If you're bringing it up, of course, I'll agree." What could it be that mattered more?
Dorothy paused for a moment before speaking softly, "I was thinking... about getting a lactation consultant."
The change in Everett's demeanor was palpable, his brows knitting slightly.
"Breastfeeding could be really beneficial for her! Everett, | want to feed our child myself."
Everett had reservations about Dorothy breastfeeding from the start, primarily due to concerns about her health. Breastfeeding
meant disrupted sleep and additional physical demands on her body.

He loved their child, but he loved Dorothy more.
"If you really want to breastfeed, | could look into—"
"You know what | mean. | want to do it myself, not have someone else do it for me."
He pondered for a few seconds, still reluctant.
"Anything but that."
Dorothy sighed, "Don't you think, missing out on her own mother's milk might be something our child regrets?"
"lI don't think so." Everett's response was swift. "If she ever brings it up, I'll explain it was for her mother's health. | believe our
daughter will understand."
Moreover, he didn't see it as a significant loss.
Dorothy pouted, "But you said you'd agree to anything | suggested!"
He shrugged, "Guess I'm going back on my word then."
